Re: SPOTY
golf cant compare to the athletes of tennis, tom Watson came 2nd in the British open at the age of sixty for gods sake. he was an old boy pottering around and nearly won the premier tournament.

This site would grind to a halt if people only commented on things they know about.

Re: SPOTY
Probably makes sense only talking about sports you know about surface.

All the top players enter the Olympics (or at least their countries no 1) in tennis and it was only because of injuries why some weren't there this year.

I mean Murray beat Djokovic and Federer to win in London who were the worlds 1 and 2 at the time.

Re: SPOTY
Murray beat Federer at Wimbledon for the first.
That was pretty good.

The Ryder Cup is a dozen or so players from 30 odd countries.

They are all great sportsmen.
Unfortunately some people have a seemingly personal dislike of Murray which baffles me.
I am sure he will survive that when he finishes his career as Britains greatest ever tennis player with millions of pounds and a knighthood.

Re: SPOTY
Olympic tennis golds don't mean shit, since the field is massively restricted and most of the best players aren't there. As for the Davis Cup, if Murray was so good, it wouldn't have just been one win, would it? Whereas Falso and McIlvoy, especially Faldo, have been instrumental in changing the face of the Ryder Cup for ever.

Sven Roeder 1:27 Tue Dec 20
Re: SPOTY
Murray of course has 2 Olympic gold medals and single handedly won the Davis Cup for the first time for GB in 80 years. A competition that has to be won against multiple individual countries.
The golfers of course play in a 2 team Ryder Cup where the whole of Europe gang up on a single country.

Re: SPOTY
I like Mo and think it will be a shame if he never wins SPOTY which is unlikely now unless he does the double again in 2020.

Thought Brownlee's interview was fair, can't find anything there I disagree with.

I probably would have gone

1. Murray
2. Farah
3. Froome

Re: SPOTY
Lasso Viren did the 5k/10k double at Munich and Montreal. He never performed that well outside of the Olympics but he seemed to peak for these events. Some Finnish athletes of that era have long been suspected of oxygenated blood enhancements. They have kept their own counsel and though this practice was not illegal at the time maybe they wanted to keep a physical edge gaming practice to themselves.

Comparisons of the relative merits of Farah and Viren are interesting. It is usually the case that when a sportsman is dominant it is speculated that one of the reasons is lack of competition. You can only beat who is available to compete, which Farah has done at World and Olympic levels ( as much as some people ignore or disparage him Farah's top gold medal winning exploits are remarkable ). We will never know whether Viren would have achieved his double gold at Montreal if the African athletes had not boycotted the event.

Re: SPOTY
Lasse Viren is VERY fortunate to still have those gold medals.

SurfaceAgentX2Zero 11:55 Tue Dec 20
Re: SPOTY
Incidentally, Faldo (6) and McIlvoy (4) have won more of golf's four majors than Murray (3) has tennis's four Grand Slams, so it's difficult to see how Murray is Britain's greatest ever sportsman. And that's just taking into account gay and posh sports.

1974 & 1978 Olympics? Cant say I recall them

I am sure Farah will pick up the Somali SPOTY and all will be happy.

Re: SPOTY
Farah has benefited from not having any serious rivals in his events. If he had been around at the same time as a Haile Gabrisellassi or a Kenelisa Bikile it's unlikely he would have won so much. That he has not broken a world record tells the story.

Murray on the other hand has had to overcome 3 of the greatest ever players in his sport to get to No. 1.

Oh, and Farah is a tax exile.

Also not true that Farah is the only man to win the 5K and 10K at successive Olympics. Lasse Viren did it in '74 and '78.

Re: SPOTY
If Murray was English instead of a sweaty, would people still have a problem with him winning?

Not digging anyone out in particular, just curious. I'm not fussed either way about his victory to be honest, but I would be praising his victory if he were English

Marston Hammer 8:29 Mon Dec 19

Ha, fair enough. Don't worry about having that think, I know it isn't easy for you. Much easier to name who isn't in the top 3.

Re: SPOTY
Most Of the finalists would have been worthy winners.

It's a heady time when someone who won three gold medals at the Olympics doesn't even get in the top three, like Jason Kenny. One more gold for him in Tokyo and he will go past Chris Hoy as our most successful Olympian.

Mo Farah probably doesn't get the recognition he deserves either.

I'd have to have a think about that, and I can't be arsed. Murray wouldn't make the top ten, possibly top 20.
